Appraisal

This is scheduled to start in September.  Revalidation for non-principals will not be required until later. Nick Bradley at the PCT is the local lead on appraisal and Vik is in correspondence with him to ensure that appraisal for non-principals is appropriate and useful. Although some “appraisers” for non-principals have already been approved, no one present at the meeting had been approached to act in this role. Some members of the group expressed an interest in doing so and Vik will forward their names to Nick Bradley.  Those wishing to be trained/assessed as appraisers should be paid for their time.
Information about appraisal is available on: www.doh.gov.uk/gpappraisal  T
here is also a site about revalidation: www.revalidationuk.info
The introduction of formalised appraisal for us may be useful in convincing the LMC to put pressure on practices to alter data-entry for locums so that we can audit our work eg by logging on under our own names rather than as LOCUM.

Education

Principals are now getting regular protected learning time with ISCADOC covering their patients so that the practices can shut. There is no plan to provide similar educational opportunities for non-principals. Vik has written to David Kernick at Exeter PCT to remind them that our education matters too!  The group discussed the possibility of arranging our own conferences. The opportunity-cost involved in loss of income for days dedicated to study remains an obstacle for locums.

Small Group

The small group organised by Karen Scrimgeour to discuss problem cases will meet at the Golf and Country Club on19th March. Anyone interested in future meetings should contact Karen on 07967 114354.

Virtual Practice

There was more information from Vik about what Devon Doctors is offering to do for the group if we ask them to act as a “ virtual practice manager” for us. This includes:

1.      Invoicing/pensions. In practice this would mean that they could pay us and invoice the practices to get money back.
2.      Speeding up payment for shifts worked for ISCADOC/Devon Docs and getting us better access to information about shifts available for Devon Docs and possibly more choice of shifts.
3.      Information cascade/training facilitation.
The group was not convinced that Devon Docs is in the best position to offer to pass on information/education to us, as they wouldn’t currently receive the information from higher up the cascade. Nor was there consensus that we would want or need anyone to manage our finances/invoicing.
Vik will feed back to Devon Docs that we are keen for them to speed up payment for out-of-hours work and to give us better access to booking shifts.
