Mr Vikram S Devaraj (Consultant
Plastic Surgeon, Royal Devon
& Exeter Hospital) was the guest speaker for the evening. Mr Devaraj gave a very interesting and practical presentation entitled
the “Early Management of Burns”. His talk covered a number of areas including
the incidence and causes of burns, immediate stabilisation of the patient
(ATLS), appropriate selection of creams/dressings and how to classify different
burn types. He also discussed appropriate referral criteria to
secondary/tertiary care and noted the relationship between childhood burns and
NAI.
Dr Mohan
was very pleased to announce to the ESGP Group that the Exeter PCT has agreed funding for the coming year. He also stated that talks were ongoing with
the Mid and East Devon PCTs for similar
funding support. This funding is seen as invaluable to the Group which it hopes
will ensure the ongoing provision of practical and appropriate clinical presentations
in addition to providing a valuable forum for ongoing professional development
to Sessional GPs in the area. The Group members present were in agreement that
in order to maintain the effective functioning of the ESGPG:
- the use of funds
should remain transparent to Group members and funding PCTs
- monthly ESGPG minutes
and yearly accounts would be provided to the funding PCTs
- committee members
should be financially reimbursed (at LMC pro rata rates) for work done on
behalf of the Group
- all work done by
committee members would be appropriately invoiced and provided to the
committee for consideration prior
to reimbursement
- any work carried out by committee members working on
behalf of the LMC, which related to the ESGPG, would be funded by the LMC.
It was
agreed that the AGM should be held at the next Group meeting (4th
January 2005) and as such Dr Mohan asked all members present to give some
consideration to how they would like the Group to progress over the coming yea,
and how it can be improved for the members changing clinical and professional
needs.
4th January - “Resuscitation
Issues” Barry Thomas (Resus Officer
RD&E)
1st February - “How the
Weather Affects our Health” Dr William Bird - (GP and Clinical Director Meteorological
