Mr Peter Schranz (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Orthopaedic
Centre, RD&E) gave a very useful talk entitled
“Common Conditions of the Knee”. He discussed how to diagnose knee problems
when patients present themselves with the usual symptoms of pain, locking or
giving way of the knee. He listed some of the more common diagnoses for those
presenting symptoms and outlined some appropriate investigations. Mr Schranz also talked through some management strategies for
these conditions. He finished by mentioning the developing role of cartilage
transplantation and cartilage cell culture.
The long awaited
return of the very successful skin forum will be held on Wednesday 25th
January 2006 at the Student Health Centre at 7.00pm. The meeting will be fully

those intending to come, in the interim please keep a look out for interesting
patients. To aid patient recruitment you can inform them that they will be seen
by a consultant dermatologist on the evening and receive a small gift as
recognition of their very valuable support. They should be asked to arrive at
the Student Health Centre at 6.30pm. A dinner will be held at St Olaves after the Forum.
The January meeting
will include the Group Annual General Meeting and everyone is strongly
encouraged to attend. The meeting will include election of committee members as
well as providing an opportunity for all members to have a direct say on the
future direction of the Group. The Group is there for the benefit of everyone
and it is hoped that all members will recognise the importance of supporting
the Group by attending and participating in the meeting. Unfortunately, Mr Barry
Thomas will be unable to run the Resuscitation Training session on the night
but if time allows there will be an alternative educational event (introductory
session on mentoring by Dr Vik Mohan). It is planned that Barry Thomas will run
the Resuscitation training session at a date to be agreed later in the New Year.
The ESGP monthly
evening meetings will have a new venue as from 7th February 2006. The
