Mr Barry Thomas (Resuscitation
Officer, Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital) was the guest speaker
for the evening. Mr Thomas started by mentioning the various life support
courses currently available (Immediate and Advanced Courses). He then did a
refresher presentation on Basic Life Support (adult and paediatric) and allowed
all present to go through the protocols with the resuscitation models. This
included discussion and presentation of the portable biphasic defibrillators.
Mr Thomas also discussed protocols for the management of upper airway
obstruction in adults and children.
The Annual General Meeting was held
and the following issues arose:
- The chairman Dr Vik Mohan stated that he was very
pleased with how the Group had developed over the last 12 months and gave
special mention to the success of the Skin Forum and the procurement of
PCT funding for the next 12 months. He also thanked everyone present for
making the Group such a success and hoped the next year would be as good.
- The outgoing committee were each re-proposed and re-elected
to their previous positions.
- Dr Mohan suggested that the ESGP Group should focus
more on the area of revalidation and appraisal over the next year and
provide more information to the Group which will help/support members with
their individual appraisals.
- It was suggested that consideration should be given to
the creation of a dedicated website for the ESGPG. Following discussion
however it was felt by the majority present that this may be quite costly
and the currently available LMC website was more appropriate.
- It was unanimously agreed that the current format of
the once monthly educational presentations was ideal and did not require
consideration for change.
- The group were in agreement that future educational
meetings should (if possible) include, as part of their educational needs,
an additional skin forum, a possible psychiatry forum, pensions
presentation and medical accountant presentation.
- It was suggested that a specific time slot should be
made available for members to present any unusual/interesting clinical
cases which had arisen over the last month to the Group. It was agreed
that this format could be trialled over the coming meetings.
- The Group all thanked the chairman Dr Vik Mohan for his hard work
and dedication to the Group over the last 12 months.
Concern was raised by members of the
Group that there appears to be uncertainty as to who will be the future contributors
to locum pensions (Practices or PCTs). A move to Practices being the employer
contributors would in theory necessitate a 14% increase in locum fees charged
directly to the Practice to offset the change.
1st February - “How the Weather Affects our Health” Dr
William Bird,
GP and Clinical Director Meteorological Office.
