Annual General Meeting

Dr Vik Mohan, the Group’s Chairman, started by thanking those who attended the meeting.

The year’s financial accounts were provided to the members and again Vik thanked the 3 PCTs (Mid Devon, East Devon and Exeter) for their financial support to date and hoped that this would continue in the future. Vik stated that the last year had been very successful and with good levels of attendance, support with appraisals, a series of very useful clinical talks and an increasingly active social aspect of the Group.  He also hoped that things would continue to improve in 2006. He stressed that the Group should be as inclusive as possible and continually strive to make new members welcome. He thanked the committee for their support over the year and although he planned to step down as Chairman he promised to stay involved and offer support/advice wherever possible.

Dr Peter Kennerley (outgoing LMC representative) reiterated the importance of the Group maintaining close links with the LMC in these changing times and felt that the Group should continue to have an LMC representative on the committee. This was unanimously agreed by the members present.

Election of the Committee

Due to the poor turnout it was felt that there was an insufficient number of members to adequately represent the Group and as such the elections were postponed until the February meeting. However, member names were proposed and seconded for the various positions and these are shown below:

Chairman – Dr Liam Kinsella (proposer Dr Vik Mohan, seconded by Dr Di Baker)

Secretary – Dr Di Baker (proposer Dr Vik Mohan, seconded by Dr P Mitchell)

Treasurer – Dr Prue Mitchell (proposer Dr Di Baker, seconded by Dr L Kinsella)

Assistant Secretary – D C Playfair (proposer D L Kinsella, seconded by Dr V Mohan)

Social Secretary – Dr Jo Fearon (proposer Dr Di Baker, seconded by Dr P Mitchell)

An open invitation was again given to all members who were interested in getting involved with the running of the Group, in whatever capacity, to put their names forward for election. If anyone is interested in joining the committee there will still be time at the next meeting to do so.

Assessment of Practice Services/Provisions

It was agreed that it would be useful to identify a list of services/provisions (locum packs, equipment etc) which the Group members regard as important in order to carry out their work safely and efficiently at the various surgeries. There is a general consensus (discussed at this and previous meetings) that perhaps not all Practices are currently providing these services/provisions and as such it would be useful (on behalf of the Group) to write to all Practices to reiterate the need for these. This issue will again be raised at the February meeting for further debate.

Skin Forum

The long awaited return of the very successful skin forum will be held on Wednesday 25th January 2006 at the Student Health Centre at 7.00pm. The meeting will be fully sponsored. Places are limited and on a strictly first come first served basis. For those intending to come please keep a look out for interesting patients. To aid patient recruitment you can inform them that they will be seen by a consultant dermatologist on the evening and receive a small gift as recognition of their very valuable support. They should be asked to arrive at the Student Health Centre at 6.30pm. A dinner will be held at St Olaves after the Forum.

New Venue Reminder!

The ESGP monthly evening meetings will have a new venue as from 7th February 2006. The new venue is the Clarence Room in the Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter (just near ASK).

Future ESGPG Meetings

7th Feb - Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Yvette Parker)

7th March - Complimentary Medicine (Professor Ernst)

4th April – Adult Psychiatry (Dr Gupta)

The members discussed what would be the most useful areas of adult psychiatry for Dr Gupta’s presentation in April and it was agreed that if possible acute services, management of psychotic patients and eating disorders should be included.

Flexible Careers and GP Retainer Schemes Conference

Dr Vik Mohan will be organising a fully funded (so its FREE) conference on the above at St Mellion Hotel in Saltash on 30th March 2006. The conference is being funded by the Deanery and is open to ALL sessional GPs from the peninsula. Lunch etc will be provided and there will be a mixture of lectures and skills based small group sessions. More information will be provided at the next meeting. If interested contact Vik.

Meeting time

Please note that the meetings are now scheduled to start at 7.00pm and food arrives at 7.15pm with the guest speaker planned to commence at 7.45pm.
