The meeting was kindly sponsored by:

                                                       Dee Warren (Maddison Healthcare)

                                                       Stephne Maykels-Strange (Beecham Research)

Guest Speaker

Dr Bill Nolan (a GP at The Clock Tower Surgery, 9 New North Road, Exeter) was the guest speaker for the evening. Dr Nolan gave a very informative presentation on a wide range of issues related to drug and alcohol dependence which he and his primary care team are very heavily involved with at Clock Tower Surgery. He talked about that cohort of patients seen at the Practice designated as “vulnerably housed” and how these are managed by the team. In addition Dr Nolan also discussed some of the other services available such as ENDAS and Addaction.

CPD Forum

It was evident that many of the sessional GPs present at the meeting were still without CPD forum passwords to enter the CPD Forum website. Dr Mohan directed them to Nicola Saffrin or Rosemary Ash at the Post-Graduate Centre, RD&E to obtain the necessary passwords.

HPE Study Days

The next HPE study day meeting dates are as follows:

15th December 2004

10th February 2005

9th March

7th April

4th May

5th June

18th July

All are welcome and it’s free. Those eligible for HPE will get funding to attend. Contact John Deacon on 01752 311972.

Read Coding

Dr Mohan was able to provide those at the meeting with laminated A4 sheet of current GMS II Quality Indicator Read Codes.

Educational Meeting

There will be an educational meeting held at Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter on the evening of 17th November on the subject of Osteoporosis Management.

Future Educational Meetings

Dr Mohan asked the group if future educational meetings on dermatology (skin forum) and psychiatry would be beneficial. The group agreed both would be useful and Dr Mohan will look into organising these in the New Year.

Seniority Pay for Sessional GPs

Discussion was held over the appropriateness and feasibility of providing a form of seniority payment to sessional GPs with more experience than their cohorts. Many issues were raised but no consensus reached by the group at this time.

Vacancies for Medically Qualified Members on the Appeals Tribunal

The positions are for those medically qualified practitioners over the age of 35 years and training would be provided. The closing date was 1/11/04 but the group was informed that if anyone was interested to contact by telephoning 0152 2431495 or  writing to The Appeals Service President’s Support Team, 2nd Floor, 36 Dale Street, Liverpool, L2 5UZ or by E-mail Dianne.condronl@appeals-service.gsi.gov.uk.

Sessional GP Group Database

Dr Diane Baker has established a database (from Sept 2004) of attendees at each ESGPG meeting which will be available to anyone wishing to include it in their appraisal portfolios.

Christmas ESGPG Party

A keen show of hands went up for the Christmas party which is planned to be held at Cohiba’s Restaurant (36 South Street, Exeter) on 14th December (7.30 for 8.00pm). The “do” is planned to be sponsored and numbers need to be confirmed by 7th December – so if you can’t make the next ESGPG meeting (see below) then contact one of the committee.
