Guest Speaker

Mr David MacLellan (Private Physiotherapist, University of Exeter) started his very interesting talk by outlining the principal roles of the physiotherapist (both in the NHS and private sectors). He discussed the different consultation style (as compared to the GP) of the physiotherapist in view of the longer consultation time available and how this allows a more holistic approach to diagnosis and patient management. He mentioned the importance of motivating the patient to comply with the management plan and agreed that this can often be difficult to achieve in primary care. Mr MacLellan then discussed a range of issues including the importance of promoting proprioception exercises in patients with ankle problems and the common under-diagnosing of joint hyper mobility in patients with knee problems. He advocated the introduction of core stability exercises and mentioned how these can be successfully incorporated into a daily routine. Some useful websites for additional information available are www.eis2win.com  and www.csp.org.uk .

Choose and Book Smart Cards

The Choose and Book system is part of the NPfIT/Connecting for Health programme and individual Smart cards are required to enter and use the system.  Mallory Lynsey (Project Officer for Choose and Book East Devon) attended the meeting and discussed the role-out of the Choose and Book scheme in Devon. Information and photographs were taken of those members present to provide them with smart cards. The availability of training for sessional GPs was discussed but at present no specific days have been allocated for sessional GPs to attend for formal training. It was suggested that individual members should liaise with their Practices to see if they can be included on any available training. Further information is available by e-mailing Lynsey.Mallory@EastDevon-PCT.nhs.uk

Skin Forum

The long awaited return of the very successful skin forum will be held in mid January 2006. The venue and final date have yet to be finalised but we are getting there!

Patient and Colleague Questionnaires

A joint venture (commissioned by the GMC) between the Peninsula Medical School and CFEP-Surveys UK is looking to develop more effective patient and colleague questionnaires which will be recommended to the GMC for incorporation into the revalidation process. As such they are looking to recruit 400 doctors to take part in the project. The project runs from November 2005 – April 2006 and if you are interested then contact Trevor Gay at Trevor.simplicity@gmail.com  or phone 01217080976 for more details.
