Guest Speaker

Dr Jim Hart (Consultant Paediatrician, RD&E) gave an excellent talk on a range of paediatric problems including food allergies, childhood obesity and chronic fatigue syndrome. He discussed the appropriate investigations and management of children with suspected cows milk protein and lactose intolerances and also when to prescribe an adrenaline pen for children with confirmed allergies.

The very important area of childhood obesity was covered and he mentioned the usefulness of the BMI centile chart, when to investigate and how to manage the obese (pre and post-pubertal) child. He suggested when to consider referring an obese child to the Paediatric team for further management.

Dr Hart finished by discussing chronic fatigue in children, how to spot it, what to investigate and how best to manage it. A CFS clinic for children will be available for referrals in the coming months.

IT Training

An afternoon IT training session is being organised with Mr David Newman (Library Information Skills Trainer) at Exeter Medical Library. The session is free and will be approx 3-hour duration. The training will aim to improve awareness and skills in using the internet for our clinical needs. We already have enough members signed up for the first session but would be happy to hear from any other interested members so that we can organise additional sessions. If interested please contact Liam by e-mail.

Future ESGPG Meetings

3rd October - “Palliative Care Update” – Dr Becky Baines (Consultant in Palliative Care)

Meetings around and about

“Palliative Care – Everyone’s Business” – speakers include Dr Keri Thomas and Dr Becky Baines - 7th November 2006 (Sandy Park Conference Centre) 1.30 – 4.30pm - contact Dr Prue Mitchell for further details (prue.mitchell@exeter-pct.uk)

Useful Websites

It was suggested that as many of the members use a selection of internet websites for clinical information it would be worthwhile sharing these sites among the Group. Members could then decide which they find useful and increase their own clinical database. To start with it was suggested that those attending the next meeting provide their useful websites for dermatology, paediatrics and palliative care.  These will then be included in the subsequent minutes for members to decide if they will benefit for their ongoing clinical learning needs.

Personalised Attendance Printouts

The Group were reminded that Dr D Baker has a list of all attendees since September 2004 and, if requested by e-mail, will provide personalised attendance printouts for individual member’s portfolios.

PCT Sessional GP List

It appears that the Sessional GP list held by the PCT may be out of date for certain members and everyone is reminded to re-update their details with the PCT if there have been any changes in their circumstances.

New Meeting Time

Please note that the meetings are now scheduled to start at 7.00pm and food arrives at 7.15pm with the guest speaker planned to commence at 7.45pm.
